The A walk will be led by Nigel Purcell. We start at Great House Barn and head to Rivington Hall Barn and then to the Rivington Terrace Gardens. We go through the gardens and follow the path to Rivington Pike. From there we head to Winter Hill and then South Eastward through Smithhills Moor leading to Gilligant’s farm. We cut back to pass Chadwick Close Farm and Holden’s Farm and plantation. We head up and over the 'Two Lads' to Pike Cottage and then to the shore of Lower Rivington Reservoir to take a look at Liverpool Castle. We walk along the shore path to Croft bridge and then back to the Great House Barn. Approximately eleven miles and about 1700 feet of ascent.
The B walk will be led by Linda Mills, starting at The Rivington and walking round Yarrow reservoir then making our way towards Rivington Barn towards the pigeon tower and on to Rivington Pike. We should see the Japanese gardens before climbing the steps up to Rivington Pike. Descent is through fields back into the wood to make our way to Liverpool Castle then walking along lower Rivington reservoir shore back to our start point. 7.8 miles and just under 1200 ft.
The C walk will be led by Helen Bates and Kath Rowlands. It is a lovely circular, undulating walk of approximately 6.5 miles. We will set off from Great House Barn Tea Room and walk along a footpath to Rivington Barn. From the Barn we will start our ascent follow footpaths to the Terraced Gardens, where we will have a coffee break at the Japanese Lake. We will then walk to the footpath which leads to the summit of Rivington Pike. The stunning views from the Pike are exceptional on a good day with views over Greater Manchester to the North Wales mountains to the South, Southport, Lytham St Annes, Blackpool to the West, When you are looking towards the Northwest, you can see Morecambe and Heysham and the Lake District Fells. Looking towards the East there is a view of Winter Hill, the site of a tragic plane crash in 1958. However, for those who don’t want to walk to the summit there is the option of waiting for us to return at a barn which sells take-away refreshments. However, there are no toilets here. We will then descend via Tiger’s Clough, which is a rocky, uneven footpath to take the path to the Lower Rivington Reservoir. We will cross a busy road to take this path so care needs to be taken when walking alongside it and crossing it. At the reservoir are the ruins of a replica of Liverpool Castle. We will have a LATE lunch close by to the ruins overlooking the reservoir. After lunch we will take a short walk along the banks of the reservoir to The Rivington Cafe/Pub which has outdoor seating overlooking the reservoirs and a Crown Green Bowling Green. Maximum ascent is approximately 1,191 feet for those who wish to go to the top of the pike. There are no stiles.
N.B. Further information for those thinking of doing the C walk on Saturday.
