These guidelines are to help you to plan and co-ordinate your walk with the other leaders on that day and so enable our rambles to run as smoothly as possible.
Please note that all walks must finish where stated in the programme.
Please liaise with Tom Hodgson - Tel 01524 417460: MOST IMPORTANT
• To see if your starting point is suitable for the coach to get there
• For a suitable place for the coach to pull in for your party to disembark safely from the coach.
Please also liaise with the other leaders on your walk day to ensure that Tom can organise the coach drop-offs enroute to our destination.
If the ramble finishes in a small village where there are limited amenities, please check local cafés/pubs for closing times and advise them of our visit and possible numbers.
Below is a guide as to the difficulty of your walk.
A good indication of your walk length is that you can do 6 hrs walking in the summer and 5 hrs in the winter months. We usually aim to be back by 4-5pm in summer and 3-4pm (before dark) in winter. Please don't hesitate to ask Tom or a member of the Walks Committee if you are unsure. C party leaders may wish to make adjustments to their walking time by including longer and more frequent breaks or other suitable alternatives at their discretion.
Note that it is at the discretion of the leader as to whether you permit walkers to walk in front of you, bearing in mind that this can force the pace above your planned timing or can encourage other members of the party to leave the main party, which is undesirable/unacceptable. Should this occur, a friendly request to remain with the leader would be appropriate.
Leaders can advise participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit for the level of walk.
Remember that maps are available from Tom Hodgson, Tel 01524 417460 (email tommy.hodge24@gmail.com) and should you require assistance in planning your walk, please do not hesitate to contact him and he will be will be happy to assist. Several committee members also have OS maps on computer and are able to calculate mileage and height for you.
Please notify Adrian Law Tel 07501 756820 (email: alaw0160@gmail.com) of your walk details at least 10 days prior to the ramble to enable him to arrange details to be published on the website and sent out to members.
Catherine Maher is our new footpath co-ordinator who will follow up with the appropriate authority any overgrown paths or bad stiles and she would be grateful if you would report these to her. She needs a photograph of the obstacle, map of the area and a grid reference if possible. Initial contact for Catherine please is via the "Contact Us" section of our website on the drop down menu.
As a condition of our insurance we have to keep an accident record book and if there are any accidents whilst on your walk please report them to Nigel Purcell who will be either on the coach or by phone on 07812 063320 or email nigel.purcell@btinternet.com
Lastly, please read and observe the Risk Assessment Form on the next tab down on the website and note that it is strongly recommended that you carry out a recce of your walk beforehand. (Note that it is NOT NECESSARY TO WRITE A RISK ASSESSMENT, but it is important that you folllow the details therein which have been approved by our insurer and are a condition of our insurance.
