Torrisholme Rambling Club is proudly celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2025 🥾🚶🏻
The A walk will be led by Adrian Law and is a linear starting at Wath we head north west, passing Rigg End, crossing the Dales Highway and ascending Nettle Hill, the highest point on the walk at 1253 feet, from there we descend to the Coast to Coast route and head for and cross Smardale Bridge and Smardale Fell continuing through fields passing Greenriggs and into Kirkby Stephen. 11 miles, 1400 feet of cumulative ascent.
The B walk is led by Kathryn Poole and Daniel Kneale and is a linear to Kirkby Stephen. Starting from Ravenstonsdale village, we briefly head East to join a track Northwards, past Garshill and across (the busy) Fell Road. Continuing Northwest past Park Hill, and through Ravenstonedale Park, skirting Breaky Neck Scar, we then turn East by the disused quarries at Smardale Bridge to then head over the pillow mounds, ascending onto Smardale Fell. Taking the North- facing track downwards, we pass Beck Wood, over the railway tracks, and through Smardale to reach the disused railway headed Northeast. We then follow the disused railway over Waitby Beck to a road bridge just past the village of Waitby. We then disembark over the bridge, heading along the roadside to Sandwath Farm and continue through Southeast, then East into Kirkby Stephen. The path brings us out by the School, where we can continue into town to meet a selection of pubs, bars, and cafes. The walk is undulating, and uneven or muddy underfoot in places. 7 Miles with 780ft of ascent. A quick note: There is a farm shop at Sandwath Farm on our way back into Kirkby Stephen. Time and weather conditions permitting, we will be able to stop for a quick look around if anyone wishes to.
The C walk will be led by Phil Bundy and takes in the pleasant surroundings of the Eden Valley. Starting at Kirkby Stephen Railway Station we head to Skenkrith Bridge then follow the disused railway Viaduct Trail in a North-Easterly direction, descending into the village of Hartley, where we will stop for a comfort break by the stream. We then follow Hartley Lane, heading West, before joining a footpath towards Kirkby Stephen. Turning to walk in a Southerly direction before entering the town, we follow the river Eden, crossing a footbridge near a typical Dales barn ("Cow-ose"). We then follow the Poetry Trail along until we again meet the disused railway. Heading back to Skenkrith Bridge, we then turn to walk alongside the opposite bank of the river North-East to complete the Poetry Trail, leading us into Kirkby Stephen. 5.5 Miles, minimal stiles and good paths. Total cumulative ascent of 387ft: undulating with no steep climbs.
