Torrisholme Rambling Club is proudly celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2025 🥾🚶🏻
The A walk will be led by Joe Graham (and friends!). It is a circular walk, starting and finishing in Hawkshead Village. Mostly in Grizedale Forest with some lovely views on route and mainly good paths. We visit Grizedale Tarn and descend from there to Grizedale Forest Activity Centre, where there are toilets, a cafe, shops and 'Go Ape'. Maybe a good place for lunch? After the centre we climb Carron Crag, which is the highest point on our walk at 1030ft - 314mts. We then descend a little and head towards High Man and Fire Tower and then High Park and Low Park. We join the original path and then down Vicarage Lane to finish in Hawkshead. There are a few boggy areas, which we will avoid by taking a different route if we have had a lot of rain in the days/nights leading up to the walk. Caution at all times - Mountain bikers use quite a lot of the forest paths. 10.7 miles 1900ft accumulative height.
The B walk will be led by Graham Thompson and is a circular starting from Hawkshead. Leaving via Wordsworth Lane, climbing west across fields out of the village towards Hawkshead Hill. We join a road for a short section, which can be busy, we then join a track running parallel to the road over Hill Fell then through woods emerging at the top NT car park overlooking Tarn Hows (coffee break). Heading downhill to the tarn taking a clockwise route on a good path to the place far end where we cross a stile onto open fell side to climb again to a gate in the wall, joining an established track turning right for 150 metres before a left at Iron Keld, again climbing to reach open land and Black Fell, heading north, Black Crag soon comes into view, an undulating path leads to the summit for lunch. We then retrace our steps back to Iron Keld, turning left along the track signposted Hawkshead via in Knipes Fold on a rough but wide track. 7 miles, 1,306 feet of ascent, 1 stile. We can stop for a breather and photos along the way.
The C walk will be led by Catherine Maher and is a circular from Hawkshead to Wray Castle and return. From the car park we take the pavement to the footpath heading north east crossing Black Beck then across fields to Scar House Lane, then up an incline to Longthwaite Lane and on to High Tock How. A short distance along a lane brings us to Hole House and field footpaths walking along a footpath south of Blelham Tarn. We walk along a lane north to turn off on a path to Wray Castle where there is a cafe and toilet facilities. We will have our lunch here before returning via Low Wray Bridge taking the footpath this time to the north of Blelham Tarn reaching High Tock How and then Birkwray Farm, then a path south to Loanthwaite, once more reaching Scar House Lane and back into Hawkshead. Good paths, 2 or 3 gentle hills/slopes, and only a couple of stiles. Elevation 200 feet ascent and 5.8 miles."
